Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has awarded an undergraduate research grant to Tyler Ewing, a senior from Fairmont. Ewing's study, "An Experimental Approach to Optimizing an Optical Character Recognition System", will be supervised by Xiaocong Fan.

Penn State Behrend awarded more than $60,000 in grant funding to 108 student researchers this semester. The college provides nearly $350,000 each year to support undergraduate research by its students.

Penn State Behrend is a comprehensive residential college with 4,350 students. The heart of the campus -- the former Glenhill Farm -- was donated by Mary Behrend, the widow of Ernst Behrend, who founded the Hammermill Paper Co. in Erie in 1898. For more information, visit behrend.psu.edu.
